Using cloud migration to deploy software products in minutes

Introduction

Deploy Lobster DATA GmbH software products in minutes by successfully migrating from on-premise to the AWS Cloud.

About Lobster

Lobster delivers digital transformation with software solutions that bring the underlying data and processes together, rather than treating them as separate entities. The company offers data integration and process automation in one, and streamlines the implementation of innovative ideas with no-code, even without programming skills, through simple, secure and scalable digitisation.

The Challenge

The software products of Lobster DATA GmbH were initially made available to customers as an on-premise solution on their own server or in Lobster's own data centre. In many cases, a technician was also needed to commission the software at the customer's site, perform the necessary on-site configurations, and oversee the software go-live.

For customers and for Lobster itself, this was a time-consuming and resource-intensive process to get the software into a usable state.

To provide customers with a better user experience and accelerate the optimization of Lobster's internal processes, a cloud migration was evaluated.

Lobster DATA GmbH's core competencies lie in software development and not in processes for internal IT, so our services were integrated into the project as a certified AWS Advanced Consulting Partner.

Lobster's objective was to set up a highly available, scalable and cost-efficient IT infrastructure for the provision of its own software products. The Amazon Web Services (AWS) public cloud fully meets these characteristics. In addition, an experienced AWS partner was to relieve the burden on the company's own IT resources in order to refocus on the core business. Accordingly, a migration of the on-premise environment to the AWS Cloud was defined as the project goal.

The Solution

With the objective of migrating the on-premise IT infrastructure to the public cloud of AWS, a kickoff workshop was initially set up for all persons involved both at Lobster DATA GmbH and on our side. In this meeting, the exact initial situation, the required project steps, and a timeline were defined. Based on this information, our experts then designed a cloud architecture as the basic foundation of the cloud migration.

For the subsequent implementation, it became clear that Lobster DATA GmbH would also have to undergo change management, such as to adapt internal IT processes in the course of the cloud migration.

During the migration of the on-premise environment to the public cloud, automated customer environments were provided on the basis of CloudFormation templates. These are also necessary for the subsequent integration of the managed services.

Results and Benefits

Lobster DATA GmbH now uses the AWS Cloud as a scalable, global platform to deploy its own software products in minutes. What previously took hours or days to complete by an on-site technician, is now up and running in minutes.

After the successful migration of Lobster DATA GmbH to the public cloud of Amazon Web Services (AWS), the subsidiary Lobster Logistics Cloud followed suit in a second project step.

Its local infrastructure was previously operated by a hoster and our team successfully migrated this to the cloud. The result is a scalable and cost-transparent cloud development environment for internal software development.

Christian Tabernig, Managing Director (Sales), Lobster DATA GmbH:

"By migrating our software products to the AWS Cloud, we enable a new way of procurement, installation and operation for our customers. We are now able to deliver within minutes, commissioning is automated, without on-site technician support, and our customers are always up to date through cloud-based updates of releases."
